Energy saving at the data centre PDF Print E-mail

BNB’s Elean Data Centre, near Cambridge, could be a model for data centre energy saving world-wide.

By locating a data centre adjacent to a power station, massive savings can be achieved by using the waste heat from the power station to enable the use of absorption chillers without requiring electricity. BNB’s Elean Data Campus 27 per cent power savings promise could bring major benefits to cash-strapped companies and help save jobs.

The 65,000m2 development, to be built on the former Mepal airfield site at Sutton, 12 miles north of Cambridge, promises to deliver reduced running costs using energy-efficient techniques. The development has planning permission and has full power and fibre available.
Using the adjacent straw-burning power station, Elean will use absorption chilling to cool the servers, negating the requirement for electricity.  This will cut the amount of energy used from 75MW to 42MW.
In addition, the campus will only use 100% carbon-neutral waste as a power source, reducing its environmental impact and further establishing its sustainability credentials.
