The Carbon Trust has announced a partnership with the British Computer Society (BCS) to develop a simulation software tool to help companies understand the energy use within data centres. The tool is being developed to address the IT industry’s need to manage growing power consumption and increased carbon emissions, which current forecasts compare to the level from the aviation industry. |

The IT industry has received yet another wake up call as Chancellor Alistair Darling announced plans that could lead to the compulsory building of ‘zero carbon’ commercial buildings, including data centres, by 2019.

Each PowerHouse contains a full continuous power system suitable to protect the load at this mission critical data centre located north of London. The international grocery and general merchandising retail chain will deploy both containerised power systems to protect the company’s data centre against power sags, fluctuations and outages. The systems are expected to be delivered in the second half of 2008. |

New research released by Morse, has found that 89% of UK businesses are oblivious to how much power their IT department uses. This is because electricity costs have traditionally been paid for by a central facilities or operations group, rather than individual departments or business areas within an organisation. The research found that only 12% of businesses charge their IT department for the power it uses. In addition, 62% of organisations said that green IT was not a top priority for them. |

Retailers wastes over £1million pa on excess data centre energy usage |

On average, top UK retailers are overspending by £1.25 million a year on the power needed to run their data centres which can equate to 50 per cent of total data centre costs and 10 per cent of their total energy bills. These shock findings are revealed in new research commissioned by data centre infrastructure specialist RichardsoNEyres which also shows that 83 per cent of the UK’s top retailers are making rising energy prices and wasted costs a top priority for 2008/9.
