Active Power has announced an order from building services contractor Haden Young for an 800kVA turnkey power system that includes UPS, generator, switchgear, related components, services, and installation. The system, scheduled for shipment and installation in Q3, will be used to provide power protection for Queen Margaret University at Musselburgh. The main contractor on the project is Carilion. The project is regarded as one of Scotland’s most sustainable; the Building Research Establishment's Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) has been used to assess the environmental performance of both new and existing buildings. It is regarded by the UK's construction and property sectors as the measure of best practice in environmental design and management. This project has been assessed as having a design capable of exemplary environmental performance, and it received a rating of ‘excellent’, which is the highest score recorded for any University project ever. Active Power’s CleanSource UPS system delivers an efficiency rating of 98%, a performance figure unmatched by competitors’ systems, that delivers real bottom line savings to clients in terms of power consumption. Neil Cockburn commented that, “Active Power produced a complete power system, aligning with the brief of sustaining a highly ‘Green Solution.’ The decision to choose Active Power was reinforced by their local after sales support and their European and Texas service hubs being connected 24x7x365 to the system, offering immediate response.” “We are proud of our participation in the Queen Margaret University project, and are thrilled to have been selected to deliver a portion of a client solution as sophisticated and elegant as this design,” said Ian Bitterlin, Vice President of Active Power’s European sales and service operations. “It’s a ground-breaking project and we look forward to assisting other clients desiring leading-edge solutions that deliver greater efficiency, reliability and availability from their power infrastructure.” The power modules selected will be incorporated into an Active-Power-designed-and-supplied, “super-silent” bespoke plant room. Included in the design is Active Power’s very own GenSTART product, this unit provides redundant starting power for the genset, significantly increasing overall system availability. The UPS system will also be provided with fullyintegrated Form 4 type 5 switchgear to BSEN60439-1 incorporating customized generator controls. This unique configuration surpasses all current European UPS specifications and offers the highest levels of security and safety. Active Power’s environmentally-friendly UPS products offer customers several advantages over traditional battery-based systems including lower total cost, higher reliability, smaller footprint, higher efficiency, longer life, and lower maintenance. “This order highlights the multi-faceted advantages of battery-free solutions, as well as the strong commitment in Europe to adopting green technologies,” said Jim Clishem, CEO and President of Active Power. “Additionally, this significant win validates the strength that our newly-formed European sales and support team brings to the market, which makes Active Power a truly global power quality solutions provider.”
